Avoid These Kitchen Renovation Pitfalls, Say Design Experts
Last updated: September 24, 2026
Thinking about a kitchen refresh? You're not alone. Many homeowners are planning upgrades, and a recent piece from Real Simple highlights some of the most common missteps designers encounter. These aren't just minor aesthetic blunders; they're often functional issues that can leave you frustrated with your new space. One frequent oversight is insufficient storage planning. Designers often notice that homeowners underestimate how much cabinet and drawer space they'll truly need. This can lead to cluttered countertops and a feeling of disorganization, even in a brand-new kitchen. It's about thinking beyond just the look and considering the daily workflow. Another common mistake is neglecting the importance of lighting. A kitchen needs layers of light – ambient for general illumination, task lighting for work areas like countertops, and accent lighting to highlight features. Simply relying on one overhead fixture rarely suffices for optimal functionality and ambiance. Functionality often takes a backseat to appearance, which is a recurring theme. Designers frequently observe that the "work triangle" – the space between the sink, refrigerator, and stove – is poorly considered. This can create awkward traffic patterns and make cooking a chore rather than a joy. Material choices are also a point of concern. While aesthetics are crucial, durability and ease of maintenance are equally important for kitchen surfaces. Designers often see homeowners opt for materials that look stunning but prove impractical for everyday use and cleaning. Finally, many renovations suffer from a lack of a cohesive plan. Without a clear vision and understanding of how each element will work together, a kitchen can end up feeling disjointed. Professional designers often emphasize the value of a well-thought-out layout and design scheme before any demolition begins. If you're in the Columbus, Ohio area and contemplating a kitchen remodel, keeping these common pitfalls in mind can be incredibly helpful. It's always a good idea to discuss your vision with experienced kitchen professionals who can guide you through the planning process and help you achieve a beautiful, functional space.
